Track 4: Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, wireless sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. The term is closely identified with RFID as the method of communication, although it also may include other sensor technologies, wireless technologies or QR codes. The wireless method of electrical communication uses low-powered radio waves to transmit data between devices. High powered transmission sources usually require government licenses to broadcast on a specific wavelength. This platform has historically carried voice and has grown into a large industry, carrying many thousands of broadcasts around the world. Radio waves are now increasingly being used by unregulated computer users.

Track 5: Ad Hoc and Sensors Networks

Ad Hoc is a type of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, a telecommunications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voice band modem can provide. ADSL differs from the less common symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL). Bandwidth (and bit rate) is greater toward the customer premises (known as downstream) than the reverse (known as upstream). This is why it is called asymmetric. Providers usually market ADSL as a service for consumers to receive Internet access in a relatively passive mode: able to use the higher speed direction for the download from the Internet but not needing to run servers that would require high speed in the other direction.

Track 7: Mobile and Wireless Network

wireless network is computer network that uses wireless data connections for connecting network nodes. A wireless local-area network (LAN) uses radio waves to connect devices such as laptops to the Internet and to your business network and its applications. When you connect a laptop to a Wi-Fi hotspot at a cafe, hotel, airport lounge, or other public place, you're connecting to that business's wireless network. A wireless network enables people to communicate and access applications and information without wires. This provides freedom of movement and the ability to extend applications to different parts of a building, city, or nearly anywhere in the world. Wireless networks allow people to interact with e-mail or browse the Internet from a location that they prefer. A mobile network operator is a provider of services wireless communications that owns or controls all the elements necessary to sell and deliver services to an end user including radio spectrum allocation, wireless network infrastructure, back haul infrastructure, billing, customer care, provisioning computer systems and marketing and repair organizations.

 Tack 10: Microwave Communication

Microwave radio transmission is commonly used in point-to-point communication systems on the surface of the Earth, in satellite communications, and in deep space radio communications. Other parts of the microwave radio band are used for radars, radio navigation systems, sensor systems, and radio astronomy. Microwaves are widely used for point-to-point communications because their small wavelength allows conveniently-sized antennas to direct them in narrow beams, which can be pointed directly at the receiving antenna. This allows nearby microwave equipment to use the same frequencies without interfering with each other, as lower frequency radio waves do. Another advantage is that the high frequency of microwaves gives the microwave band a very large information-carrying capacity; the microwave band has a bandwidth 30 times that of all the rest of the radio spectrum below it.

Track 11: Remote Sensing

Remote sensing is the process where the Remote sensors collect data by detecting the energy that is reflected from earth. These sensors can be on satellites or mounted on aircrafts. The electromagnetic radiation is normally used as an information carrier in remote sensing. Remote sensors gather information by measuring the electromagnetic radiation that is reflected, emitted and absorbed by objects in various spectral regions, from gamma-rays to radio waves. To measure this radiation, both active and passive remote sensors are used. Passive remote sensors record natural sensors that is reflected or emitted from the earth surface. The most common source of detection is sunlight. Active sensors use internal stimuli to collect data about earth. Remote sensing methods are used to gain a better understanding of the earth and its functions. A Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) is being developed to connect earth observation systems around the world. A comprehensive and coordinated system of earth observations could lead to better management of environmental data and could fulfil numerous societal benefits.

Track 12: Radar Technology

Radar stands for Radio Detection and Ranging. It is an object-detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. A radar system consists of a transmitter producing electromagnetic waves in the radio or microwaves domain, a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna (often the same antenna is used for transmitting and receiving) and a receiver and processor to determine properties of the object(s). Radio waves (pulsed or continuous) from the transmitter reflect off the object and return to the receiver, giving information about the object's location and speed.

Track 13: Antennas

An antenna is a transducer that converts radio frequency (RF) fields into alternating current or vice versa. There are both receiving and transmission antennas for sending or receiving radio transmissions. An antenna is an array of conductors (elements), electrically connected to the receiver or transmitter. During transmission, the oscillating current applied to the antenna by a transmitter creates an oscillating electric field and magnetic field around the antenna elements. These time-varying fields radiate energy away from the antenna into space as a moving transverse electromagnetic field wave. Conversely, during reception, the oscillating electric and magnetic fields of an incoming radio wave exert force on the electrons in the antenna elements, causing them to move back and forth, creating oscillating currents in the antenna. Antennas play an important role in the operation of all radio equipment. They are used in wireless local area networks, mobile telephony and satellite communication.

Tack 17: Big Data

Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured – that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis. But it’s not the amount of data that’s important. It’s what organizations do with the data that matters. Big data can be analyzed for insights that lead to better decisions and strategic business moves. The amount of data that’s being created and stored on a global level is almost inconceivable, and it just keeps growing. That means there’s even more potential to glean key insights from business information – yet only a small percentage of data is analyzed.
